Lui-Kay (Ao Leiqi) was born in Hong Kong in 1934 but moved to
the Mainland in the early 1950s to attend university outside Beijing.
After graduation he traveled Northern China and Korea with the army
before settling down in the city of Guangzhou.
Since
his youth he had had a desire to study the martial arts, yet he
had been unable to find that which he sought- a great style, and
a great teacher. In Guangzhou, however, Ngo Lui-Kay heard of wing
chun and was drawn to it by its practicality and its usefulness.
He was then fortunate to find an extraordinary teacher of wing Cchun
in Dr. Sum Nung.
The combination of an intelligent system that was refined and yet
effective and a teacher who understood and could explain the system
to its most minute of details was more the Ngo Lui-Kay could have
hoped for. He began training under Sum
Nung in the mid-1960s and followed him for approximately a decade
and a half. Working hard and practicing constantly, he devoted himself
to the development of his wing chun kuen skills.
In 1982, with the help of his uncle, Ngo Lui-Kay
was able to move his family to Canada. For a long time in Canada,
Ngo Lui-Kay kept his knowledge of wing chun kuen very quiet and
accepted no students, preferring to invest his time in his business,
working hard and trying to secure a future for his family. In 1990,
he began teaching a small group of students including Antony Casella,
Georgia Dow, David John, Rene Ritchie, Deon Weir, and Wilson Woo.
